I research harvester ants out in Apalachicola National Forest. Because of the poor choice by the FWC to open bear season, there have been hunters in and around our study site. We have seen many bears in the area the past few weeks, as well as people illegally shooting rifles.
It’s irritating that I’m in danger of getting shot at work by trespassers, but what really gets me, is that the FWC seems to have intentionally discluded the public from bearing weight on this serious management decision.
Put up to a vote, the season would probably not go through. Yet, in a world where people are GOING to hunt bears, the best thing we can do is react politically and pressure the FWC to manage the bears right. That is, maintain population records, actively collect data, reconsider permit amounts, hold public forums, ect…
Bleeding hearts in the wake of the bear season are expected, but we must also appeal to reason and democracy.
We have one year.
The world is watching you FL.
